Background information/context

Gender Equality Law 2006 in Vietnam provides principles across various aspects that address issues relating to gender equality. The law firmly prohibits all forms of gender discrimination, including gender-based violence. The 2016 Law on Children states that the obligations of children are to: “assist their parents and family members to perform household related tasks in accordance with their age, sex and developmental level”. However, as per our GAP report conducted in May 2023, gender norms heavily impact on how girls and boys are treated, even regarding play. Gender norms affect children's learning and play activities. Boys often participate in physical, active, and energetic activities (football, basketball, running, badminton, roller skating, volleyball, blind man's bluff, and table tennis) while girls participate in quieter and less physically active play activities (board games, badminton, skipping, reading books, and drawing pictures). This leads to girls spend less than 3 hours a day playing; some only have 30 minutes for entertainment. In contrast, boys spend an average of at least 3 hours or more.

Save the Children tackles this issue with Girls Decide approach where promote girl’s lead and voice at all activities. This approach included 03 books. Those books are developed in English and have been translated in Vietnamese by a translation company. This TOR is to contextualize the approach to fit Vietnamese context.

Objective: The objective of this assignment is to edit and finalize the content of the project materials in Vietnamese to be contextualized with Vietnam situation with more child-friendly language.

Location and official travel involved: The Supplier will supply services in his/her home. The Supplier will have a field trip to Quang Binh province to join the meeting with children and teachers on validating the contents of the project materials.

Services the Supplier will provide:

• To facilitate 02 meetings (01 with children and 01 with teachers) in Quang Binh province to validate the contents of the project materials.
• To revise the project materials based on the feedback of children and teachers.
• To finalize the project materials based on the comments from SCI.

Experience and skill set required:

The following are minimum requirements for a successful consultant for the position:

• Academic qualification: Hold a bachelor’s degree in Linguistic, Literature, Communications, Education or relevant degrees;
• At least three years of experience in editing, publishing work, or works related to books editing;
• Ability and capacity to deliver editing under tight deadline;
• Familiarity with natural resources management/environmental awareness is desirable.
• Experience in working with development sector is favourable
• Comprehend English is favourable

SCI expects the following deliverables to be provided:

Timeline

The consultant will be required for an input as follows:

• Estimated commencement date: 2 October 2023
• Estimated end date: 30 October 2023

Status updates/reporting

The Supplier shall provide the weekly progress update with project team in the duration of the service.

Acceptance

• Deliverable 1 – to be accepted by SCI within 2 days of delivery date.
• Deliverable 2 – to be accepted by SCI within 2 days of delivery date.
• Deliverable 3 – to be accepted by SCI within 5 days of delivery date.
• Deliverable 4 – to be accepted by SCI within 5 days of delivery date.

General assumptions and dependencies

SCI will organize validation meetings with children and teachers in Quang Binh province.

Payment information 

• The Supplier will propose total fee for this service. The Fees are inclusive of all costs, overheads and travel cost of 01 trip to Quang Binh province for facilitating the validation meetings.
• The advance for the Supplier is not allowed.
• The final payment will be transferred via bank.  100% of the total cost payable within 30 days of satisfactory completion of deliverables.
